Sore legs!

Yesterday I had a crazy idea. I'm not sure what came over me, but I thought I'd take a trip down to the mailbox and get all the mail. It had been 2 days since anyone had been down there and I thought there might be something good. By this time there was probably 4-6 inches of snow on top of some ice. A couple times I got a little to much on the edge of one of the ruts in the road and about lost it. Let's just say it probably would've been good watching for someone who loves "America's Funniest Home Videos!"

By the time I got back up to the top with my armload of mail my legs were burning! I had a small little flashback to our trek up the mountain back in September. And then I realized I could still breath so it wasn't anything like our trek up the mountain in September.

About the time I got up from the mail run Dad was already out doing chores. We had to haul hay down to the steers and then go down to feed at the south barn. By the time we got done I wasn't sure if I would be able to eat supper I was so tired. HA! I'm never too tired to eat!

When I got up this morning I felt the effects of my snow walking yesterday. It wasn't too bad except my calves, for whatever reason, are the most sore. Maybe it was the mud boots, or maybe it was because I had my coveralls tucked down inside and it was a wee bit tight. Anyway, ever so often I'm reminded of how I should be walking in the snow all the time and I'd be in WAY better shape!!

I finally got my apple cobbler fix this afternoon. I think it might be one of the best I've ever made. Not that I'm trying to brag on my cooking, but it was pretty stinkin' tasty!!!

Good thing I've been burning some calories the last few days!!!!!!!!!!!

Winter Wonderland

Well, it's here. The weather guys have been talking about this storm for a week. Thankfully, here it hasn't gotten as bad as they first thought. I think there's about 1/2" of ice on the trees. The snow's been coming down since last night around 10 and it's not suppose to quit til after dark. We'll see how much we get!

I'm always amazed at how quiet snow makes the world. Maybe it works as a buffer. Maybe it's just because nobody is out and about. I love that part.

Doing chores around here takes twice as long as usual, but that's just part of the deal. The ice on the tanks and pond this morning was about 2 inches thick, but it was kinda a slushy ice. Does that make sense? It wasn't too tough to break.

It's almost time to go out again and get everything fed. I think I'll go have another chocolate chip cookie!!

Calm before the storm!

Today is a beautiful day! It's a little windy, but it's not like we never get wind around here. Tonight the bottom's gonna drop out. We've been preparing for the worst as we've been told to do by our wonderful Governer(pardon the sarcasm).

Brother came out this morning to wire us up a generator so we'll have one house on the place with a heater if the power goes out from all the ice and wind they're sayin we're gonna get. I hope they're wrong, but if they aren't, we'll be semi prepared. In the past we've missed all the bad ice, but someday it'll get us. I've been planning in my head all the things I want to cook while we're homebound for a couple days. Why is it that cold nasty weather makes us want to cook? Maybe that doesn't happen to everyone. But I'm thinking an apple cobbler is on my "to do" list tomorrow!!!

I'm afraid we're not really set up in this day and time to rough it too long. We rely on electricity so much that we can't cook, bathe, watch tv, all the important stuff! I can't imagine how my Great Grandmother made it in a soddy in New Mexico during the Depression. She gave birth to 2 children there and didn't think twice about it. I can't imagine giving birth in the best hospital in the US!!! They were just made of different stuff back then.

Well, hope everyone enjoys the sunshine today and makes it through the next few without frost bite!!!

A BIG Boy

Mom and I made the run over to Eastern OK to help sis#2 and family. It was good. Buzz was a little better by the time we got there Friday night. He had a headache and a little fever Sat., but was in pretty good shape. Woody had a cough by the time we left Sunday afternoon, but he'll be fine.

Now about Snort, he's HUGE!!! This baby is 6 weeks old and weighs 14 1/2 pounds! He's smiling and holding his head up like he's 3 months old. I'm thinking there was a mix up some way and he was actually carried for 12 months so he's a little older than we think. When he and Ruby meet up he'll be able to hold her for their picture together! He's literally twice her size and only 28 days older. By the time Sunday afternoon rolled around Aunt Red's arms were a little on the jello side from holding/bouncing/burping this little giant. I guess I need to work out a little!

Since MaMaw was there to take care of baby and Buzz was feelin some better, sis and I got some stuff done! It's amazing what 2 sisters can get done in a few hours between Dr. Pepper and Hallmark movie breaks!!!

An Amazing Person

My sister is an amazing person. Well, they all are, but I'm talking in this particular instance of sis#2. She'd be the one just younger than me and just had baby boy #3 in December.

Her husband went to take his grandmother back to western Kansas yesterday. Sis#2 and Sis#4 were planning to meet up in Tulsa and head this way this afternoon to see Ruby and her parents. We got the call this morning that Buzz is sick and they won't be coming. Major let down for all of us!!!

She's got a dr. appointment for Buzz at 1:30 this afternoon. Usually when they have dr. appointments husband is there to help her. Not this time. She has to take all 3 kids, 1 being sick and the most high maintenance child I've ever seen, to town to the dr.'s office. She's not pouting or whining. She's just gonna do it. I love that about her!!!

I think mom and I are headed over there tonight to help out even though she's "Super Woman." Husband won't be back til Sunday I think and I bet she needs a nap! And to top it all of Walter the Wonderdog died 2 days ago. Sis#2 had him for 9 1/2 of his 10 years and he's gonna be missed! In early 2002 she ran over him with our truck and he lived another 7 years. That's not too bad of a life for a dog.

I would hope I could be as tough and calm as she is in this type of situation, but I don't think that's possible!!

My hair's too red!

Ruby

Ruby and parents are home from the hospital. They are doing well except for being sleep deprived! Last night I went over for a while and got to hold her. She's just beautiful. There wasn't anyone else there except sis-in-law's mom and she didn't mind me holding her so much.

I got home about 10:35 and my brother called our mom because Ruby was screaming her head off and wouldn't stop. Apparantly, a little while after I left, little Ruby got a bad tummy ache. I'm not sure if our mom went into nurse mode or Mamaw mode, but she left pretty quick. Brother had Ruby asleep by the time mom got there, but that didn't last long. Mom helped them with some tricks for the colic thing so next time they can know what to do. Being a first time parent is tough!

I don't know what we'd all do without our mom! She's a machine!!! She definitely knows the baby thing.

Now, I want to clear up something I put in the post about Ruby the other day. There was a song in the 70's by Kenny Rogers called "Ruby." It was about a Vietnam Veteran who came home from the war crippled. Ruby was his wife. It's one of my favorite Kenny Rogers songs. Not that I'm a Kenny buff, but there's a few I like. That's the thing with that song line "Ruby, don't take your love to town." Actually, the song is sad and that's probably the reason I've always liked it.

Have a good day!

Life with Grandma

I haven't talked about my Grandma a whole lot on this blog. She's 89 and wound up like an eight day clock!

In the last couple years she's had a few health issues she's dealing with, but other than that she's doing great. She's able to live by herself and cook for herself. She doesn't realize how many people her age and even younger are in a home somewhere unable to do anything for themselves.

There's one thing about my Grandma though that has been goin on for a very long time. She doesn't have a electronic or mechanical bone in her body! Things like car's, telephone's, tv's, vcr's cause her major stress! A long time ago she didn't get her car in gear and it rolled down the road and into the pond at the park. Grandpa wasn't happy about that one.

But, one thing of the modern era that she's struggled with the most is her cell phone. She's been through a few of them over the last 10 years and we've yet to find one that she can really get along with.

Here's a little example.

Last night she and I went to town. She needed and item that isn't sold in our town. After we got that particular thing at a grocery store we went to Wal-Mart. I needed to return something so I told her I'd find her when I got finished. She said, "I've got my phone." This wasn't a comfort to me at all. After I got finished at customer service I started hunting her down. Usually, I'm able to find her fairly quickly just by checking each isle. This time it didn't work. I finally resorted to calling her cell phone. First time no answer. I waited a little bit after I hung up the phone so if she heard it she could call me back. After about 5 minutes I tried again. Still no answer. After a few minutes she called me back this time. I asked her where she was.

She replied, "I'm looking for some glue".

"Are you in the crafts or in Hardware?"

"Should I go to Hardware?"

"Where are you right now?"

"I'm by the sewing stuff."

"Don't move. I'll be right there."

"OK"

So, I head straight to the sewing stuff. It took about 1 minute. I found her leaving the sewing aisle and talking on the cell phone. I said, rather loudly, "Grandma!"

She turned around and headed back towards me still talking on her phone. I asked her who she was talking to.

She said, "I'm talking to you!"

I didn't say anything. She closed the phone and put it in her purse. She didn't know I'd hung up! And, she didn't stay where I told her to stay! I just had to laugh inside. Even though she couldn't remember what she needed to use the glue on we found some she thought would work.

I can't wait to be 89!!!

It's Ruby!

Ok, we have a winner. Actually, I got a text this morning from a good friend who couldn't leave a comment, but wanted to submit a name for my new niece.

So, she's gonna be Ruby. Her hair is red enough and besides, I've always loved that name. Do you remember Ruby in the book "Christy". And I think there was a Ruby May in "Anne of Green Gables" also. Anyway, it's perfect. Thanks "Good Friend"!!

And let's hope when she grows up she won't "take her love to town". HAHA

Anyone get that???

A Retraction

Alright, so I may have spoken a little too soon about my new niece's hair. Last night I went up to the hospital to see them. All cleaned up her hair is really a strawberry blonde. We'll see how it turns out. She's just precious though. And she's already got her daddy "wrapped around her pretty little finger"!! Anyone know that song????

They should be going home today and the adventure will continue!

WAHOO, Another Niece

I have another niece! I'm so excited!!! Yesterday at 2:40 am my brother called and said he and my sis-in-law were headed to the hospital to have their first baby. I hurried to get myself together and went with my folks to the hospital.

The sweet little bundle was born about 1:30 pm. She and her mom are doing great. Every since my first nephew was born I've been hopeful for a little redheaded niece or nephew. I think I've finally gotten the one! A few of the other's have had red hair when they were born, but it didn't stick. This one has hair as red as her dad's. I think it will stay! If it doesn't, well, I'll be crazy about her anyway.

I haven't figured out what this little one's name should be for this blog. Any suggestions????

Hope everyone has a great day!

The Big Thaw

Today was a beautiful day!!! The sun was shining and the temp was a balmy 45 degrees. Or maybe our trusted weather man said 54. I could've remembered that wrong. Anyway, it was a nice warm day! It's funny how a 3 degree night can make a 45 degree day feel like July 4th.

It's amazing how much snow is still around from our Christmas Eve blizzard. I was beginning to think we'd have snow on the ground all winter. When I went to the barn tonight to feed the red dirt was a little squishy.

I love that!

Tomorrow evening my dear traveling friends from "Sisters Four" are coming over for supper and a movie. I'm gonna try a new pasta recipe from "The Pioneer Woman's" recipe log. I hope it works!! Even if it doesn't we'll have fun anyway.

That's what we do.
Have a great week everyone and enjoy the sunshine!!!

An Old Friend is Back!

Ok, she's not old. Not by a longshot. However, she's one of my closest friends and has been for probably 20 years. A couple years ago she moved to St. Louis for a job. I haven't seen her since she moved. Actually, I didn't see her for about a year before she moved. You know how it is, things changed and sometimes we don't change with them. I'm the one who didn't change.

What I mean by that is my life is generally the same as it was 20 years ago. Maybe more. I live in the same spot. I worship with the same congregation. I've worked in the same place for 13 years. Before that I worked across the road from where I work now. Thing is that everyone around me pretty much has moved on and done new things. All my siblings got married. Most of my friends did the same, or got new jobs, or moved away, etc.

You know what's funny, I feel more settled right now than I have in years! I spent a long time thinking that I was suppose to be somewhere else. I didn't know where that somewhere else was, but I was certain I just wasn't gonna stay here. Apparantly I was wrong. And I'm so glad I have figured out that I'm where I'm suppose to be.

I have 2 friends who are sisters. These friends have been in my life for about 25 years I think. They are a little younger than myself, but not by much. They're kinda in the same boat I am as far as everyone around them moving and changing. I know it's just a matter of time before they will be doing the same( You know it's true girls!!!). As sad as I'm gonna be when one or both of them moves away, I now have the confidence that I'll be able to handle it. And then maybe I'll be able to go visit somewhere great because they'll be there!

Back to my friend who's moved back. I've always thought it puzzling that she and I could not talk for months and then as soon as I heard her voice it was just like 10 years ago when we talked every day. I think that's the measure of a true friend. Someone you don't have to see or talk to everyday, but someone you know is always gonna be the same in your heart. When my sister's all got married and moved away from our home place I was lost. This friend helped me through all of it.

I think we all need that in our lives. I'm so glad I have it!!!

The Big Boy

Hoss is gonna have a run for his money I think! Sis#2 called after Snort had his 3 week appointment with the doc and said he'd grown 1 3/4" and gained over a pound. Small wonder all he wants to do is eat and sleep!! If he could only get his nights and days figured out I'm sure my sister wouldn't mind him sleeping loads when he feels like it. When Hoss and Snort get grown it might be something to see!!

I noticed the other day when all the kids were at my folks for our Christmas gathering that Buzz, Little Joe, and Rowdy are all the same height. There's nearly a year difference between Buzz and Little Joe, and then Rowdy is 11 months younger than Little Joe. Maybe Rowdy is gonna be the tall one. I guess we'll see. Since I'm only 5'3" I bet they're all gonna be taller than I am. I hope so anyway!!!

Stay warm!

It's a cold start to 2010!

We made it through the holidays mostly in one piece. I can't tell you the relief and joy I feel that it's January the 4th. I will start taking down the decorations this evening!!!!!

It's gonna be a very, very cold week for Oklahoma it seems. I will be leaving the water running in the house non-stop. I guess an Arctic blast is here and will be for at least a week. I think it's suppose to be 36 tomorrow, but then the bottom is suppose to drop out for several day. We get to pretend we live in the north for a few days. Except it's so much worse up there. I don't have a clue how anyone up there survives, much less is able to take care of livestock!

So, stay warm everybody!!!
