Calm before the storm!

Today is a beautiful day! It's a little windy, but it's not like we never get wind around here. Tonight the bottom's gonna drop out. We've been preparing for the worst as we've been told to do by our wonderful Governer(pardon the sarcasm).

Brother came out this morning to wire us up a generator so we'll have one house on the place with a heater if the power goes out from all the ice and wind they're sayin we're gonna get. I hope they're wrong, but if they aren't, we'll be semi prepared. In the past we've missed all the bad ice, but someday it'll get us. I've been planning in my head all the things I want to cook while we're homebound for a couple days. Why is it that cold nasty weather makes us want to cook? Maybe that doesn't happen to everyone. But I'm thinking an apple cobbler is on my "to do" list tomorrow!!!

I'm afraid we're not really set up in this day and time to rough it too long. We rely on electricity so much that we can't cook, bathe, watch tv, all the important stuff! I can't imagine how my Great Grandmother made it in a soddy in New Mexico during the Depression. She gave birth to 2 children there and didn't think twice about it. I can't imagine giving birth in the best hospital in the US!!! They were just made of different stuff back then.

Well, hope everyone enjoys the sunshine today and makes it through the next few without frost bite!!!

A BIG Boy

Mom and I made the run over to Eastern OK to help sis#2 and family. It was good. Buzz was a little better by the time we got there Friday night. He had a headache and a little fever Sat., but was in pretty good shape. Woody had a cough by the time we left Sunday afternoon, but he'll be fine.

Now about Snort, he's HUGE!!! This baby is 6 weeks old and weighs 14 1/2 pounds! He's smiling and holding his head up like he's 3 months old. I'm thinking there was a mix up some way and he was actually carried for 12 months so he's a little older than we think. When he and Ruby meet up he'll be able to hold her for their picture together! He's literally twice her size and only 28 days older. By the time Sunday afternoon rolled around Aunt Red's arms were a little on the jello side from holding/bouncing/burping this little giant. I guess I need to work out a little!

Since MaMaw was there to take care of baby and Buzz was feelin some better, sis and I got some stuff done! It's amazing what 2 sisters can get done in a few hours between Dr. Pepper and Hallmark movie breaks!!!

An Amazing Person

My sister is an amazing person. Well, they all are, but I'm talking in this particular instance of sis#2. She'd be the one just younger than me and just had baby boy #3 in December.

Her husband went to take his grandmother back to western Kansas yesterday. Sis#2 and Sis#4 were planning to meet up in Tulsa and head this way this afternoon to see Ruby and her parents. We got the call this morning that Buzz is sick and they won't be coming. Major let down for all of us!!!

She's got a dr. appointment for Buzz at 1:30 this afternoon. Usually when they have dr. appointments husband is there to help her. Not this time. She has to take all 3 kids, 1 being sick and the most high maintenance child I've ever seen, to town to the dr.'s office. She's not pouting or whining. She's just gonna do it. I love that about her!!!

I think mom and I are headed over there tonight to help out even though she's "Super Woman." Husband won't be back til Sunday I think and I bet she needs a nap! And to top it all of Walter the Wonderdog died 2 days ago. Sis#2 had him for 9 1/2 of his 10 years and he's gonna be missed! In early 2002 she ran over him with our truck and he lived another 7 years. That's not too bad of a life for a dog.

I would hope I could be as tough and calm as she is in this type of situation, but I don't think that's possible!!

My hair's too red!

Ruby

Ruby and parents are home from the hospital. They are doing well except for being sleep deprived! Last night I went over for a while and got to hold her. She's just beautiful. There wasn't anyone else there except sis-in-law's mom and she didn't mind me holding her so much.

I got home about 10:35 and my brother called our mom because Ruby was screaming her head off and wouldn't stop. Apparantly, a little while after I left, little Ruby got a bad tummy ache. I'm not sure if our mom went into nurse mode or Mamaw mode, but she left pretty quick. Brother had Ruby asleep by the time mom got there, but that didn't last long. Mom helped them with some tricks for the colic thing so next time they can know what to do. Being a first time parent is tough!

I don't know what we'd all do without our mom! She's a machine!!! She definitely knows the baby thing.

Now, I want to clear up something I put in the post about Ruby the other day. There was a song in the 70's by Kenny Rogers called "Ruby." It was about a Vietnam Veteran who came home from the war crippled. Ruby was his wife. It's one of my favorite Kenny Rogers songs. Not that I'm a Kenny buff, but there's a few I like. That's the thing with that song line "Ruby, don't take your love to town." Actually, the song is sad and that's probably the reason I've always liked it.

Have a good day!

Life with Grandma

I haven't talked about my Grandma a whole lot on this blog. She's 89 and wound up like an eight day clock!

In the last couple years she's had a few health issues she's dealing with, but other than that she's doing great. She's able to live by herself and cook for herself. She doesn't realize how many people her age and even younger are in a home somewhere unable to do anything for themselves.

There's one thing about my Grandma though that has been goin on for a very long time. She doesn't have a electronic or mechanical bone in her body! Things like car's, telephone's, tv's, vcr's cause her major stress! A long time ago she didn't get her car in gear and it rolled down the road and into the pond at the park. Grandpa wasn't happy about that one.

But, one thing of the modern era that she's struggled with the most is her cell phone. She's been through a few of them over the last 10 years and we've yet to find one that she can really get along with.

Here's a little example.

Last night she and I went to town. She needed and item that isn't sold in our town. After we got that particular thing at a grocery store we went to Wal-Mart. I needed to return something so I told her I'd find her when I got finished. She said, "I've got my phone." This wasn't a comfort to me at all. After I got finished at customer service I started hunting her down. Usually, I'm able to find her fairly quickly just by checking each isle. This time it didn't work. I finally resorted to calling her cell phone. First time no answer. I waited a little bit after I hung up the phone so if she heard it she could call me back. After about 5 minutes I tried again. Still no answer. After a few minutes she called me back this time. I asked her where she was.

She replied, "I'm looking for some glue".

"Are you in the crafts or in Hardware?"

"Should I go to Hardware?"

"Where are you right now?"

"I'm by the sewing stuff."

"Don't move. I'll be right there."

"OK"

So, I head straight to the sewing stuff. It took about 1 minute. I found her leaving the sewing aisle and talking on the cell phone. I said, rather loudly, "Grandma!"

She turned around and headed back towards me still talking on her phone. I asked her who she was talking to.

She said, "I'm talking to you!"

I didn't say anything. She closed the phone and put it in her purse. She didn't know I'd hung up! And, she didn't stay where I told her to stay! I just had to laugh inside. Even though she couldn't remember what she needed to use the glue on we found some she thought would work.

I can't wait to be 89!!!

It's Ruby!

Ok, we have a winner. Actually, I got a text this morning from a good friend who couldn't leave a comment, but wanted to submit a name for my new niece.

So, she's gonna be Ruby. Her hair is red enough and besides, I've always loved that name. Do you remember Ruby in the book "Christy". And I think there was a Ruby May in "Anne of Green Gables" also. Anyway, it's perfect. Thanks "Good Friend"!!

And let's hope when she grows up she won't "take her love to town". HAHA

Anyone get that???

A Retraction

Alright, so I may have spoken a little too soon about my new niece's hair. Last night I went up to the hospital to see them. All cleaned up her hair is really a strawberry blonde. We'll see how it turns out. She's just precious though. And she's already got her daddy "wrapped around her pretty little finger"!! Anyone know that song????

They should be going home today and the adventure will continue!
